With the long developed history since the 17th century and the worldwide spread, Roulette has 3 main variations include French, European, and American variants. However, the most popular variation is the European Roulette which is played most in both land and online casino. The basic rules have existed in both 3 variations, but they also have different rules.

Roulette is structured with a small ball and its symbol, the wheel. The players place a bet and the dealer will toss a ball. If the ball falls on any number which is your betting number, you will win. With some special rules, the players do not have to guess exactly the winning number. While the American Roulette provides two zero pockets, the European Roulette just offers one zero pocket that leads to the difference between these variations.

The Differences Between The European Roulette And The American One

As mentioned above, this casino game has 3 variations which are French, European, and American variants. While the French and European share the same wheel and the same higher profit for the players, the American one is much complicated and offers lower benefits for gamblers.

First, let’s talk about the wheel (the symbol of the European and American Roulette. As mentioned above, the American wheel was designed to raise the banker profit and reduce the winning chances of players. Thanks to it, the European table gains more favor in the worldwide gambling industry because it offers a higher winning chance for the players. About the wheel design, the American variant adds one double-zero pocket to the wheel, which increases the amount of the zero pockets from 1 to 2 and boosts the banker profit up to 5.26% compares to the European variant, its banker profit is just 2.7%. However, both of them still have the same, the numbers are colored alternately between red and black, and green is used for the zero pocket(s). There are 18 black and 18 red numbered pockets. The odd numbers from 1to 10, and 19 to 28 are red color, whereas the even numbers are black color. With the remaining numbers, 11 to 18 and 29 to 36 are colored conversely, black for odd numbers and red for even numbers.

Odd and even numbers are also alternated. These numbers on the American wheel are set with more structured that two successive numbers are placed opposite to each other. Different to the American wheel, there is no clear pattern about the structure of the numbers on the European wheel. We can easily notice that these numbers are alternated between low (1 to 18) and high (19 to 36) numbers, except number 5 is next to number10. One more difference is about the position of the numbers. The numbers on the American wheel are placed outside while the numbers on the European wheel are placed towards the heart of the wheel.

Second, the difference in the betting table. The outside betting options are placed along with the American table while the European table sets the outside betting options on both two sides of the betting layout.

Although these variations are played with the same rules, it is necessary to know that the big difference which gives a big winning chance for the gamblers. In case you are playing the American Roulette, if the ball falls on a zero pocket, all of your outside bets are lost. However, in the French variant, you can gain half or all your outside bets thanks to some special French rules. Of course, some European tables offer all of these French rules, so you have to read the specific terms of each table to gain more benefits.

The chips in the European and the American Roulette are also different. In European Roulette, the dealers use the normal casino chips, while the dealers of the American table use the special chips. This creates a new mission for the players: remember the betting position. All bets will be controlled by the dealers with the support of a special stick.

Betting On The European Roulette:

Roulette starts right when you place your chips on the betting options of the table. These wagers are permitted until the dealer throws the ball and a few seconds later for final wagers. After the winning number is announced, the dealer pays the winning bets and collects all the losing bets. Then, the players bet again with different betting options to start a new round.

There are different betting limits which are provided in each table, include the maximum and minimum betting value. The players can bet optionally, as long as obeyed these betting limits. European betting layout is similar to those of French and American variations. The betting options are in two main groups: ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ bets.

Inside Bets:

These bets offer the players with a small winning chance, yet the payout is very high. Inside bets include:

Straight Bet: The player bet on a specific number with one chip on one number. When the ball falls on your chosen number, you win. The ratio is 35:1.

Split Bet: You bet on 2 consecutive numbers on the betting table by putting the chips on a median line between 2 numbers. You win if the ball falls on one of these numbers. The ratio is 17:1.

Street Bet: You bet on 3 numbers in only one row by putting the chips on the border at the end of the row. The ratio is 11:1.

Corner Bet: You bet on 4 numbers that shape a square on the betting layout such as 1, 2, 4, and 5. To place a bet, you put the chips on the junction part of these four numbers. The ratio is 8:1.

Sixline Bet: You bet on 6 numbers of two successive lines by putting the chips on the junction of the edge lines of both two rows such as 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18. The ratio is 5:1.

Outside Bets:

Opposite to the inside bets, the players have more chances to win this casino game, but the ratio is quite low for the outside bets. These are:

Column Bet: You bet on all the numbers in one of three columns on the betting table by placing the chips on the boxes which are placed at the end of each column. The ratio is 2:1.

Dozen/Group Bet: You bet on one of three groups of numbers which are group 1 (1 to 12), group 2 (13 to 24), and group 3 (25 to 36) by place chips on the dozen box. The ratio is 2:1.

Red/Black Bet: You bet whether the red or black color will win by placing chips on the color box. The ratio is 1:1 (even money).

Odd/Even Bet: You bet if the winning number is odd or even by placing chips on the even or odd box. The ratio is 1:1.

High/Low Bet: You bet whether the winning number is low (1 to 18) or high (19 to 36). The ratio is even money.

The Exotic Call Bets:

As mentioned above, some European table offers the French Roulette rules. These are called a racetrack or call bets. There are 3 main types which belong to this type of bets:

Voisins du Zero: You bet on 17 numbers which are distributed evenly next to number zero. These numbers are on the part between the numbered-pockets of 22 and 25. These are: 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, and 25. It cost 9 chips to place a bet. You set 2 chips on the trio of 0, 2, and 3, 2 chips on the corner of 25, 26, 28, 29 and all the remaining number is placed with on chips like a split bet.

Tiers du Cynlindre: this bet represents for all the numbers which are opposite to all the numbers of Voisins du Zero, include the numbers: 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33. It costs 6 chips for a split bet to cover all the numbers.

Orphelins: all the remaining numbers belong to this bet. These are in both two sides of the wheel, consist of 2 sets of numbers which are 17, 34, 6, and 1, 20, 14, 31, 9. With Orphelins, the players use 5 chips to place a bet.

The Zero(es)

With one more zero pocket which is a double-zero pocket on the American wheel. The presence of this pocket increases the profit of the casinos. In fact, the number zero does not belong to even, odd, or high, low, and evenly black or red on the wheel. So we can recognize that number zero represents the banker profit.  With two zero-numbered pockets on the American wheel, the players get little chance of winning. Although the European wheel also provides the zero pocket, it is still relaxing because of its higher chance to win. Besides that, its rules are more advantages which offer the chance for the players to get back the betting money, even when the ball falls on the zero pocket.

With a worldwide reputation, the players can easily start to place bets right now like any other online gambling. You just have to follow the rules above and apply their betting strategy.
